Suspects Attempt Burglary of Pikesville T-Mobile Store

Two unidentified suspects are believed to have attempted to burglarize the T-Mobile store in the Milford Mill Shopping Center in the 8000 block of Liberty Road this morning by driving a van into the storefront.

A passerby called 9-1-1 after seeing a Chevrolet conversion van being driven into the front of the store around 5:51 a.m. Two suspects exited the van but were still unable to gain entry to the store because of a security gate barring the window and entrance areas. They were seen fleeing towards the nearby Exxon gas station, leaving the van, which was later determined to be reported stolen, still in the storefront.

Police and fire units responded and secured the scene. BCoFD investigators determined that there is no structural damage that would cause the shopping center to be unsafe, but T-mobile will be closed since the van penetrated the picture window.

This incident will continue to be investigated by officers of the Pikesville precinct.

Baltimore County Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who has stolen thousands of dollars worth of copper wiring from street lamps in Dundalk.

Pikesville Chamber of Commerce Officer of the Year 2016 Mark Canning

$

0

The Pikesville Chamber of Commerce Officer of the Year for 2016 is awarded to Officer M. Canning #5556.

Officer Canning was one of the precinct leaders both in his squad and on his overall shift during the 2016 year. Officer Canning works the overnight shift and the majority of his criminal arrests and case clearances were from self-initiated investigations, rather than just responding to dispatched calls. He understands the importance of a proactive approach in effectively controlling and deterring crime.

Officer Canning is a young officer, but one who is dedicated to his position as a law enforcement officer. His experience in patrol has led to him becoming a thorough and intuitive investigator, the epitome of a good “beat cop.” One example of this occurred in December when he conducted a routine check of a registration plate on a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was reported stolen in Baltimore City. Upon stopping the vehicle he spoke with the driver, a female who immediately explained that the vehicle was not hers but gave a reasonable explanation as to why it was in her possession, including the keys. Officer Canning made keen observations of her behavior and responses to questions and recognized that she was being deceptive. Ultimately he confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen from a hospital parking lot after the keys were lost. He was able to arrest the suspect, recover the vehicle and return it to the victim. During the course of the arrest he also discovered illegal drugs and paraphernalia, with which the suspect was also charged.

Additionally, Officer Canning removed two illegal firearms off of the Pikesville streets. One was confiscated from a prohibited felon, who was then charged accordingly, and the other was confiscated during an arrest in an area identified with a crime trend. Both cases required keen investigative skills and proper documentation to ensure a successful prosecution of the suspects.

Another case exemplifying Officer Canning’s vigilance and dedication to his profession involved five suspects of thefts from auto in an identified crime trend area. Not a simple case, as each suspect stopped in a different location  in an area where a car was broken into. Officer Canning did an excellent job of articulating the facts of the case, resulting in the arrest and proper charging of five juveniles. The arrest and charging of juveniles holds additional procedures and responsibilities for officers, but Officer Canning did it with skill and efficiency.

In addition to the great investigative work that Officer Canning accomplished throughout the year, he also achieved an outstanding amount of criminal and traffic violation enforcement. Officer Canning is a competent and reliable officer who is an example to other officers and an excellent representation of the core values of this agency: Integrity, Fairness, Service. Congratulations to Officer Canning on his award for Pikesville Chamber of Commerce Officer of the Year for 2016!

A 20-year-old bicyclist was killed when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver last night in the 6200 block of Charles Street in Precinct 6/Towson.

Aaron Michael Laciny, 20, of the 1300 block of S. Charles Street, 21230, was transported last night with life-threatening injuries to Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators believe he was struck by two separate vehicles.

The Baltimore County Police Crash Team was called to the scene just after 10:30 p.m. for a bicyclist struck by a vehicle in the 6200 block of Charles Street in Towson.

Preliminary investigation shows that Laciny was operating a bicycle in the southbound  lane on Charles Street when he was struck by a motor vehicle. Charles Street is a four-lane road, and Laciny was riding his bicycle in the left lane, nearest to the center  line.

Investigation indicates that the vehicle that first struck the bicyclist failed to remain at the scene of the crash.

The bicyclist was struck by a second vehicle, a Cadillac automobile, as it came upon  the crash scene in the dark. The operator of that vehicle contacted police immediately and remained at the scene.

Investigators seek the public's assistance in locating the vehicle that initially struck Aaron Laciny's bicycle. Investigators believe the collision may have taken place somewhere near the area of North Charles Street and Charlesbrooke Road.

The vehicle involved in this collision may have front end damage to its bumper. Police ask anyone with other descriptive information about the suspect vehicle -- or with any other information about this incident -- to come forward as soon as possible. Contact police at 410-307-2020.

Laciny's bicycle was not equipped with reflectors or lights, and the bicyclist was not wearing reflective clothing. He was wearing a helmet.

The Baltimore County Crash Team continues to investigate this crash.
